we're
finally seeing more programming on rogers on demand. with canwest
having struck a deal with rogers, there are now more than 60 hours of
programming being offered at anytime on ROD. in addition to city tv's
acquired shows such as 30 rock and lipstick jungle, you can view
popular programs like the office, prison break, house and heroes
whenever you want. it even offers two daily soaps: the young and the
restless and days of our lives (my grandmother would have loved that,
god rest her soul).
this all sounds like good news, but beware: some shows don't have the typical on demand features of fast forward, rewind and pause AND come loaded with commercials. so far looks like the most popular shows (the office, lipstick jungle, 30 rock) are set up this way and that city tv is more advert heavy while global just runs promos for their other shows. also, rogers claims shows will become available after their first airing, but in my experience, some are up to a week behind their first broadcast.
overall, all these factors combined mean that this extra on demand content will only serve as a last resort option in case i forget to pvr a show i want to watch, and it isn't available online. i tried watching a new show i'd never seen before and the fact that i had to sit through commercials turned me off so much that i just gave up. you can't allow a viewer to have so much control over live television, then deny it in the context of an on demand channel. doesn't work. let's see if they figure that out sooner than later.
