little britain has come to the US of A. unlike other across the pond re-dos, this show is an actual spin-off of the original series, once again written by and starring brits matt lucas and david walliams. if you've enjoyed the british show, you likely will find the american installment entertaining. i say likely because in some ways the show's humour is slightly more jarring than found in the british version. probably due in part to the differences in british and american comedy sensibilities, this makes the sometimes controversial elements of little britain seem a tad incongruent when set against an american backdrop.
that long assed sentence being said, if you could handle the british version, this one won't phase you much. what i'm most curious to see is how american audiences react. the degree to which little britian USA treads on the line of comfort, could certainly piss off many. it finds its humour in fat people, immigrants, the british, the gays...the list goes on. some could find it incredibly offensive, others could see it as an exercise in blowing up prejudice to such a degree that it becomes funny.
the question is how well this shall translate for those americans who are narrow minded as it is. with sketches playing on everything from hispanic accents to gay eroticism in the white house, it will all hit rather close to home. will they laugh or cry foul? or worse, will it all fly over their heads only to encourage their ignorant ways?
• little britain USA airs on the movie network monday nights at 9:30 pm. you can also catch it on TMN on demand a little further up the dial.
